Book Review: “House Of Lies & Sorrow” by Emily Blackwood

This book was wonderful! I’ve been watching the author’s TikTok videos for a while now and I was intrigued by her cover and her little teaser snippets of the story. She made it clear that this book was an enemies to lovers (which I’m currently obsessed with!), with no spice but lots of tension. If you know anything about the BookTok community, you’ll know that we love anything with the dark and brooding, husky voiced princes and soldier characters. That kind of, “If you put your hands on my girl, you’ll die,” energy. This book had all of that!

It was a fairly small book so I got through it pretty quickly, and I’m a slow reader so that was refreshing. I finished it in the car journey on my way to Durdle Door with my family, so that was great.

It focuses on Jade Farrow, a human girl who is forced to hunt food for her family, to feed them and keep her and her little sister alive because their father has become useless since their mother died, resorting to drinking, making him vile and abusive. Humans are seen as the scum of the earth by the fae nobles, but when her father makes a deal with the fae king to save his own backside, Jade is forced to marry the fae prince. She immediately goes there thinking she’s going to die, because he’s rumoured to have killed all of his previous wives. But when she arrives, she realises there is a lot more to the prince and his family than she can see.

They do taunt her, but she’s tough and makes it a lot longer than his previous wives.

If you love the film Ready or Not, and books with the above tropes, I think you should give this one a try!
