How time flies! I still remember when I first decided to create my little editing business two years ago. I’d been working for a charity in London as the Head of Literature, organising the charity’s book blog, writing book reviews and much more, running a book tour and organising workshops, as well as trying to promote the director’s books. It’s strange to think that if I didn’t work for The Sapphire Community Group, I might not be here now, organising myself for the many projects I have to work on. So for that, to them, I’m very thankful. At first, it was a temporary internship in a literature environment, but then it became so much more than that, and I ended up staying there for an extra three months before I had to leave because I was spending too much and not earning enough.
I remember my very first project, a short literary script for someone I knew through studying Creative Writing at university, and then shortly after, I edited a full length book for an author I’d met through the charity I was working with. For free, but she offered to give me a review, and she did. She is now working in my old position at the charity, so I believe she’s done well herself.
Then, I began meeting clients through Facebook writing groups, dropping my website link in and providing free sample edits, and eventually I started working with new authors of my own. But I started just before Covid happened, and I’d also just been furloughed from working in a hotel, (the same one the 100 hundred people from Wuhan stayed in for their isolation in the UK, strangely enough), so I made better use of my time and began freelancing, while also working on my own novel.
Since then, I’ve worked in a wide variety of genres, with many different authors, and I’ve learned a lot since then. Those authors have also inspired me to go down the indie route myself!
