Book Review: The Marionettes by Katie Wismer

Isn’t that cover gorgeous? I’ve been reading a lot of books by indie authors recently, but I thought I’d let myself get sucked into this book, since the author is going to be editing my first novel in January, and I wasn’t disappointed. If you’re a fan of Sabrina’s Chilling Adventures on Netflix, you’ll probably find yourself enjoying this one. It also made me think of The Witch’s Kiss by Katharine & Elizabeth Corr. Basically, it’s a book about a teenage witch. But in this story and the world it’s set in, vampires play a big part as well. The witches are companions for the vampires, and The Marionettes is a prestigious institution run by blood witches, to do their dirty work for them, covering up many of their crimes. But not many people know about this, it seems.

I really enjoyed the urban fantasy feel, with the world-building that is at times like our own world, but with supernatural elements as well. I enjoyed meeting the main character, Valerie and her witchy friends, and getting to know more about their friendships. And of course, the romance between Valerie and a handsome vampire Prince!

The main character, Valerie, is trying to get into The Marionettes, and along with the other witches, must face a series of brutally dangerous trials, including learning to save people who have been poisoned. As one of the few remaining blood witches, she feels she has a good chance of getting in, but when a series of murders appear on their doorsteps, Valerie is thrown into a dangerous plot of survival. She begins covering up murders alongside the Prince, while also realising that someone is out to sabotage her.
